Ke-mo sah-bee (/ˌkiːmoʊˈsɑːbiː/ often spelled kemo sabe, kemosabe or kimosabe) is the term used by the fictional Native American sidekick Tonto as the Indian name for The Lone Ranger in the American television and radio programs The Lone Ranger. The Lone Ranger was kept secret or attributed to a variety of actors (Hal Taliaferro, Herman Brix, Lee Powell, Lane Chandler, George Letz) to build suspense for the masked one’s big reveal in the serial’s final installment. My great-grandmother was quite a bit of Native American, she grew up Cherokee or maybe Creek Indian. In interviews in 20, Depp claimed to have Native American ancestry, stating, “I guess I have some Native American somewhere down the line. Noting that tonto in Spanish means “stupid” or “crazy,” some people have pointed out that kemosabe sounds a lot like the Spanish phrase quien no sabe, “he who doesn’t understand.” (In Spanish-language versions of The Lone Ranger, Tonto is called Toro, Spanish for bull.) Is Johnny Depp Native American?
